SEAWEED FESTIVAL – REPORT ON THE OPENING DAY
Little Loch Broom Marine Life launched the perfect start to a week of seashore fun, science, art, and community celebrating Scotland’s first Seaweed Festival!
In discovery and sharing of all things seaweed The Isle Martin Seaweed Festival 6-12th September, which has taken place on the shores of Loch Broom, Little Loch Broom, and Coigach has been a fantastic opportunity to learn about and appreciate our shorestep marine algae. The potential for planetary solutions, sustainable local nutrition, carbon sequestration (blue carbon store), and incredible biodiversity is a story seeped in history, prehistory, entangled in our lives, and future solutions.
The opening event on Monday 6 September saw over 45 people, local and visiting, including exponential energy and enthusiasm from pupils and staff of Badcaul and Scoraig Primary schools, MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross Maree Todd, BBC Alba, and Radio Scotland!
We played, surveyed, recorded, charcoaled, tasted, and whittled our way through a warm and happy afternoon of total seaweed emersion.
All thanks to co-hosts of the event: Artist Julia Barton (Isle Martin Seaweed Festival), Sue Pomeroy and Family (Little Loch Broom Marine Life), Fiona Mackenzie (Aberdeen Science Centre Community Outreach), Peter Cunningham (Wester Ross Fisheries Trust), Seaweed Festival Friends and volunteers, and special deliciousness Seaweed Fudge provided by Loch Ewe Salt and Seaweed.

Not-for-profit community groups in the north Highlands are being urged to apply for The Rural Communities ‘Ideas into Action’ Fund, backed by the Scottish Government.
The new fund – part of the £3 million Rural Communities Testing Change Fund – invites applicants who have innovative and new solutions to the challenges facing their community.
The Fund is supported by £1.5 million of Scottish Government funding and will be delivered in partnership with Inspiring Scotland.
The fund launched on Monday 13 September and will close on Friday 8 October at 12 noon.
MSP for Caithness, Sutherland & Ross, Maree Todd said: “Locals know their community better than anyone, and we know that a ‘one size fits all’ approach is not effective in representing the many unique challenges facing our rural communities.
“The Rural Communities Ideas into Action Fund is a fantastic opportunity for local community groups to access funding that will enable them to pilot new ideas and make a difference to their local area.
“I’m a strong advocate for local decision-making and community empowerment, so I’m excited to see the launch of this fund. Successful applicants have a real opportunity to change their communities for the better and even influence future policy.
“I would urge any community groups in Caithness, Sutherland & Ross who is bursting with great ideas to come forward and submit an application ahead of the 8 October deadline.”
