Railway upgrade at Garve level crossing
Network Rail are to undertake essential maintenance work at Garve level crossing on the Kyle of Lochalsh railway line, which will require an overnight closure of the main A835 trunk road.
Immediately adjacent to Garve railway station, the upgrade is scheduled over one weekend from Saturday 30 to Sunday 31 October. The existing level crossing is becoming life expired and will be lifted out then replaced with new rails. The work is part of Network Rail’s commitment to maintain and renew over 20,000 miles of track and 6,000 level crossings across its portfolio.
Natalie Montgomery, Infrastructure Maintenance Delivery Manager for Scotland’s Railway said: “The planned work at Garve level crossing is necessary as this is a key route for passenger rail services between Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness. We also acknowledge this will cause disruption to road users as a full closure of the main road will be required. We are working closely with BEAR Scotland (Transport Scotland’s trunk road Operating Company) to communicate the situation to key users and intend to keep the duration of closure to an absolute minimum. While we do appreciate the short-term impact the delivery of this work will have, the long-term benefit is that that we won’t need undertake activity of this type for many years to come.”
To complete the required work in the safest and most efficient way, the level crossing will be closed as follows:
Half Road closure: 19:30hrs until 22:00hrs on Saturday 30 October
Full Road closure: 22:00hrs on Saturday 30 until 08:00hrs on Sunday 31 October
Half Road closure: 08:00hrs until 16:00hrs on Sunday 31 October 2021
During the full road closure there will be no vehicular access over the crossing, except for emergency vehicles.
During periods of half road closure vehicles will be able to cross over the railway in either direction under the control of temporary traffic lights.

ULLAPOOL AND DISTRICT DARTS LEAGUE
Many thanks to all who attended the UDDL meeting on Monday 4th October.
It is anticipated that there will be six teams available to play in this season’s league which will hopefully go ahead.
There will be a further meeting at 20:30 on Monday 18th October in the Morefield. If there are any other interested parties they will be welcome to attend.
Could representatives from each team please attend this meeting and bring with them a list of the dates between the beginning of November and the end of March that their venue will not be available for games. Intentions are still to hold the games on Friday evenings at 19:30.

Doug Allan is an award-winning natural history photographer, documentary filmmaker, diver, author and public speaker. Sir David Attenborough commented “Wildlife cameramen don’t come much more special than Doug”.
Doug is touring Scottish theatres this Autumn with his latest show “It’s a wrap”, sharing his extraordinary filming challenges and successes.
Part retrospective, the show is also Doug’s perspective on climate change and its impacts on the world’s wild places. What change of emphasis and direction should we now be incorporating in wildlife films?
“There are big days when animals behave spectacularly right in front of your lens. And other quieter times when a deeper understanding reveals itself, a new insight into the environment and what’s alive there. I’ll be talking about these moments of truth and how they’re the biggest privilege of a wildlife cameraperson.”
“I’ve always balanced optimism with reality but the latest world climate report lays bare the need for radical, urgent action. There are solutions, and I want to talk about them. They’re all challenging, some are scary and depend on us making deep changes to how we live. The planet’s at a crossroads and we’re at the wheel. The next few years are going to be exciting.”
In his 35 years of filming he’s been involved with more than 65 films, freelancing for the BBC, Discovery, National Geographic and others. He was principal cameraman on many prestigious award-winning programmes, making over 25 trips to the Antarctic and more than 30 across the Arctic, filming for series including Hostile Planet, Forces of Nature, Operation Iceberg, Frozen Planet, Ocean Giants, Human Planet, Life, Planet Earth, The Blue Planet and Life in the Freezer.
