GLIMPSE, the Bridge House Art portfolio course exhibition, opens to the public on 27 Feb. The course is known for the high quality of work produced with this year’s exhibition looking particularly exciting.
Eleven students, ranging in age from 18 to 70+, began the full-time, immersive course in October 2021. Two of the students, Lorraine Thomson and Caroline Williams, live in Ullapool but most travelled from much further afield including Larry Carlson who crossed the Atlantic to join the group. Whether from Dundee, Oxford, or New York State, all made Ullapool their home for the duration of the course.
The students come from a wide range of backgrounds and have equally diverse reasons for undertaking the course. Sue Slack is already a successful landscape artist with a studio in Lockton on the edge of the North York Moors. She joined the course to learn new ways of working but got more than she bargained for when she became one of the Spartans – a group of students who meet for early morning swims in Loch Broom before beginning work in the studio.
Sue said, “I know that when I go home to North Yorkshire, a little bit of my heart will remain in the Highlands.”
Visitors to the exhibition will experience a thought-provoking display of art from figurative to abstract, using materials ranging from traditional oils, printmaking and acrylics, to found cloth, collage, and ink and bleach. Student sketchbooks and portfolios will also be on display, giving a fascinating insight into the creative process. The exhibition will be on display in An Talla Solais, Market Street, from Sunday 27 Feb – Sunday 6 March, 10am-4pm.
