By comparison the Gairloch & District Times is 95p and a fortnightly publication. We are also increasing the cost of some advertising so from Issue No. 2489 the price of a full page advert in the Ullapool News will be £35 + VAT = £42.00 (by comparison, £52 in the Gairloch and District Times); the half page size, the quarter page size and eighth page sizes will remain the same at £20, £10 and £5, all plus VAT respectively. In addition, items in the Property for Sale/To Let section of the paper will be increased to £15 + VAT per week.
We hope our readers will understand that we really have no choice but to instigate these rises and that you will continue to support your local community newspaper.

Ullapool recruitment drive planned by new care home owner
Parklands Care Homes is to hold a recruitment drive in Ullapool as it gears up to take ownership of the largest care home in the village. Grantown based Parklands is to the acquire the Mo Dhachaidh care facility which cares for up to 21 older people. Parklands expects to complete the acquisition and registration process in the coming weeks, and further details will be issued in due course.
In the meantime, the care operator – which has nine other homes around the Highlands and Moray – will hold an open day for prospective employees on Wednesday 3 August at the Macphail Centre (Dundonnell Room), Mill Street, Ullapool from 11am until 6pm. The drop in event is also open to anyone who would like more information about care facilities at Mo Dhachaidh.

Malin is picked for Judo Team at the Commonwealth Games.
Local girl Malin Wilson has been selected as one of only 11 fighters to represent Team Scotland in the Judo event at the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Malin (27) grew up at Inverbroom and Leckmelm, attended primary and high schools in Ullapool, and started her Judo career at Lochbroom Leisure Centre, where her dad Brian taught a class. She progressed to clubs in Invergordon, Alness and Inverness before moving to Edinburgh to train full-time with Judo Scotland. After a period of training in France, and several visits to Japan – the home of Judo – Malin now lives, trains and competes from a base in Madrid, Spain.
Following successes at European level in 2021, Malin suffered a serious knee injury and has spent much of this year in surgery, recuperation and determined recovery; a difficult period which she has marked the end of by taking a Bronze medal at the Senior European Open in Switzerland last week.
The Commonwealth Games Judo events are on 1-3 August at the Coventry Arena. Raise a big Ullapool cheer for Malin – fighting on 2nd August in the women’s under-57kg category!

On Monday 18 July, Ullapool Bookshop hosted and chaired author John McLellan (The Faultline, set in Kinlochewe).
John happily spent the afternoon in the bookshop meeting customers and signing or dedicating books, some of which are now flying off to France, Spain, New Zealand, Holland and also staying here in Ullapool. In the evening, a small but enthusiastic and interested group gathered to listen to him read from his debut novel, which is set in Kinlochewe. The Faultline tells of a group of geology students and describes their lives, the geology and the unique history of the area, all of which we were told are very dear and important to John.
He also was explaining how the book was written during the first lockdown and some of the proceeds from its sale are going to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where he volunteered during the lockdowns and near to where he is based. The book is distributed by the NorthWest Geopark and is in stock at the Bookshop now.
On Tuesday 19th July, Ullapool Bookshop also welcomed another author, Neil Lancaster, (pictured left), who came over the from the Black Isle to sign copies of his 2 Scottish crime thrillers: Dead Man’s Grave and The Blood Tide.
Ullapool Bookshop is hoping to have more author visits / book signing over the coming months, which we will update you all on social media or in Ullapool News wherever possible.
