SCHOOL MAINTENANCE
The October holiday sees the end of an era for an iconic piece of public art in Ullapool, when the glass front doors of the High School and Macphail Centre are replaced. The outer set of doors, which were a collaborative artwork by artist Donald Urquhart and the pupils of Ullapool High School, are defective and no longer provide the security required for a public building. Unfortunately, Highland Council has reported that the doors are not repairable and need to be replaced. Current legislation also requires greater accessibility for all. In light of the cultural and historical importance of the doors and on discussion with the council and the contractors, the doors will be removed carefully and kept intact. We are in the process of finding secure storage for the glass panels which it is hoped may be repurposed by creatively incorporating them into another building. We are looking for people to help at a Soup and Pudding Lunch (all proceeds to Gino’s Cantina) in Ullapool village hall on Saturday 12 November – in the kitchen, serving, on the door etc. We also need soup and pudding makers. HOGMANAY at the VILLAGE HALL
Do you fancy helping out at the Hogmanay Ceilidh Dance in Ullapool village hall from 8pm until around 1am? Your age is immaterial as long as you are over 25 and accept that you can’t drink alcohol at any time during the evening. It is always a friendly event with a great band that gets everyone up dancing. It is being organised by Ullapool Book Festival to fundraise for next year’s festival. If you can help then a proportionate share of the profits will go to whichever local group you are involved with or to a nominated charity. The Post Office on Wheels will have a temporary home at the Village Hall and will remain there until it has a permanent location. The opening date will be confirmed once we finalise all the details. Heather Parlett.
