CONGRATULATIONS!

A massive well done to Emma Goodall-Copestake who won our 2022 Student of the Year Award for Achievement!  Emma studied her HNC Childhood Practice from our Ullapool College Centre. She was nominated by her Lecturer not only for her outstanding academic achievement, but also for her fun-loving attitude which helped to gel the class together and create great bonds between students who studied in many different college centres around the West Highlands.  She facilitated motivational Monday quizzes, and even helped organise a class birthday party for herself and a fellow student when the students met up together in Fort William, which again, emphasises the hugely positive class environment she supported her Lecturer to create.  Emma worked as a Practitioner at Kinder Croft Nursery in Ullapool throughout her course and was also an exemplary Class Rep. She regularly shared her experiences with the class to give examples of best practice and stimulate debate and discussion about real – world applications.  She is now studying to become a Primary School Teacher, and is a very worthy recipient of the award! Congratulations on all of your success Emma. – #ThinkUHI – UHI West Highland, Ullapool

THIS WEEK, THE ULLAPOOL NEWS IS PUBLISHING ITS 2500th ISSUE! – To celebrate the occasion, we have reproduced the very first issue, all two sides of it!  It will stir memories in lots of older folk in the area!  The Ullapool News was the brainchild of Barry Todd, Donald Mason and Iain Campbell.  The first issue was published on Saturday 10 February 1973, price 2p, from 34 St Valery Place.  We’ve come a long way since then…!  Ullapool News Team

ULLAPOOL UNWRAPPED – We have some exciting news!  We have been shortlisted for the Social Innovation Challenge 2022.  This is a fund of £50,000 to help deliver innovative, solutions to climate change in Rural Scottish communities.  We are 1 of 4 organisations pitching for the award and we will know whether we have been successful or not by the end of October. This funding will help us to open a full bricks and mortar shop and Community Climate Hub for Ullapool and its surrounding areas. Providing access to affordable and sustainable shopping, workshops and resources, all with community at its heart.

All the shortlisted enterprises are doing fantastic work in rural areas, and even if we don’t win we are just honoured to have made it to this final stage of the application.  We will see what happens! – Firstport #socialinnovationchallenge2022
