DR TOM PATEY
Ullapool Book Festival will be holding an hour-long event on Saturday 4 March at 2.30 pm upstairs in the ferry terminal on the book One Man’s Legacy, about the late Tom Patey. Dr Tom Patey was a legendary climber who was a GP in Ullapool for 10 years until his death in a climbing accident in 1970 when just 38 years old.
The event will feature the book’s author Mike Dixon and its editor Deziree Wilson in conversation. It will be free but ticketed. More details on that next week.
UBF is very pleased to be hosting this – we have been in touch with the publisher since last summer when word first came out that a book on Dr Patey was due for publication. We know there are still quite a number of people in the area who were his patients (a quarter of the UBF committee were). And there are just as many people who will know of his reputation as a serious climber.

Applications open for the Scottish Charity Awards 2023
The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) is calling for voluntary organisations and individuals across the country to apply for its annual Scottish Charity Awards. Now in its 17th year, the Scottish Charity Awards are designed to celebrate the best of the voluntary sector, and to highlight the incredible organisations, inspiring people and innovative projects that have made an immeasurable difference to the communities they support over the past year.
Applications are now being accepted for 2023, with SCVO placing particular importance on hearing from voluntary organisations and individuals that reflect the diversity of the sector. The award categories are Employee of the Year, Trustee of the Year, Community Action, Campaign of the Year, Charity of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Digital Citizen, Pioneering Project and Climate Conscious; with the winners to be decided by a panel of judges.
All finalists will also be entered into the running for the People’s Choice Award, giving members of the public a chance to vote for their favourite finalist to win. SCVO received an overwhelming response last year with hundreds of applications and over 18,000 votes cast for the People’s Choice Award, and hopes that even more organisations will be inspired to apply this year.
Anna Fowlie, Chief Executive of SCVO, said: “Every year, the Scottish Charity Awards remind us just how amazing voluntary organisations, their staff and their volunteers are. It’s a unique chance to see the life-changing contributions they make every day in our communities, and I would urge you to apply to make sure your work gets the recognition it deserves. Don’t be shy – apply!” Applications are open until 12pm on Friday 17 March 2023 and can be completed on the SCVO website: scvo.scot/scottish-charity-awards/apply.

SCHOOL FILMS—FILM G
Every year, FilmG hold a competition for short films in Gaelic. This year, both the Primary School and the High School have taken part. The topic of the year was the colour yellow, which in Gaelic can also mean fortunate.
The High School’s film, ‘Buidhe nach Maireann’, a murder mystery about the colours of the rainbow, was made with help from the FilmG crew. The Primary School created their own film, ‘Na Daoine Beaga Buidhe’, filmed on a mobile phone. It is about wee yellow people who live in the Back Rooms. We also made a very short film called Leo, about a toy lion who goes on a rampage. You can see all of these films on the FilmG website.
Friday 20th saw the films being premiered at the Primary School, complete with the red carpet (thanks to the High School!) film star experience and invited parent audience. It was a great experience, and the films can be seen by everyone in the community as part of the Real to Reel screenings at the Harbour.
Lastly, you can help: the High School’s film has made it onto the shortlist, so please give them your vote by going to the FilmG website. Thanks to all who helped us!
