TIM LOFTUS, JOHNSON AND LOFTUS BOAT BUILDERS, ULLAPOOL – ST VINCENT

Built in 1910 by W & G Stephen of Banff, ST VINCENT is a sailing drifter of timber carvel construction. She worked in Scottish waters for many years, and later in Grimsby, Lowestoft, and as a pleasure vessel in North Shields, before returning to Scotland in 2007.
St. Vincent’s owner stipulated that no compromises be made in the authenticity of the rebuild. This ethos has resulted in an unusually pure restoration and offers great opportunities for learning how these vessels were operated and the challenges experienced by the people who fished her in the earliest part of last century.
All new timber was selected in the round, milled on site, and shaped with tools familiar to the shipwrights of 1910.
A real effort was made to replicate the original configuration and the lack of an engine teaches us much about traditional seamanship.
It is hoped that St. Vincent is now ready for another 100 years and that the quality of the rebuild by Ullapool boatbuilder Tim Loftus and the team at Johnson & Loftus Boatbuilders will stand to inform future generations of how the Zulu was built and worked.

Student of the Year announced at UHI West Highland Graduation
A SWAP Access to Nursing student has been named not only as Student of the Year for her college course but also as the overall UHI West Highland Student of the Year 2022-23.
Carol Innes is 35 and lives in Ullapool where she is mum to 4 children and works part time in the High School as a Pupil Support Assistant – in her spare time, she also became one of the first female retained firefighters to be part of the Ullapool crew and is a volunteer coastguard.

Anne Butler named President of Mountaineering Scotland
Two-time Full House completest becomes first woman to hold post
After confirmation at the 2023 Mountaineering Scotland AGM & Members Gathering, held on Saturday 11th November in Birnam Arts near Dunkeld, Anne Butler has been named as the new President of Mountaineering Scotland.
Anne said: “I’m extremely proud to be elected as President of Mountaineering Scotland and honoured to be the first woman to hold the position.”
“I fell in love with the mountains during a trip to Scotland in 1998 and I had no idea then, how hillwalking would shape my life over the next 25 years.
“Following a move to Aviemore in 2008, hillwalking has kept me physically and mentally strong and I have developed a deep connection with the landscape and the natural environment.
A member of The Munro Society since 2005, holding the posts of Secretary and President, Anne is well-known for her extensive hillwalking experience, including her recent completion of two Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) Full Houses, when she became the first-known woman to undertake two full rounds of Munros, Munro Tops, Corbetts, Grahams, Donalds and Furths.
