Gaelic writer from Wester Ross announced as Scottish Book Trust’s 2024 New Writer Awardees
A Gaelic teacher from Laide in Wester Ross has been announced as one of eleven recipients of Scottish Book Trust’s 2024 New Writers Award.
Iain Cuimeanach (Cumming) (48) is a Gaelic teacher at Gairloch High School whose writing is inspired by the rich history, culture, people and landscape of the Highlands.
Every year Scottish Book Trust, the national charity changing lives with reading and writing, holds the prestigious year-long writer development programme to support burgeoning writers living in Scotland.

New Broom investigates unusual increase in sales
The Ullapool charity shop is looking into an unexplained steep rise in cash sales over the winter and a run on strange objects such as singing goldcrests, tablecloths, postcards and ironing paraphernalia. In related news, Loch Broom Hardware reported a rise in sales of boiler suits and small knives, and in requests for unusual items such as orange string… . Investigations are underway, looking into reports of suspiciously clad strangers wandering the streets late at night. One woman was seen lurking outside the petrol station for a lengthy period of time in a rainstorm holding a sketchbook. Another, wearing what appeared to be a nightdress and wellington boots, was spotted wandering along Market Street photographing lamp posts.
Suspects include ten enthusiastic artists who have relocated to Ullapool from across the UK, including Oxford, Aviemore, London, and from the USA, for an immersive four-month art course at Bridge House Art. Several of these women have been observed sneaking into choir practice, roaming the streets photographing local buildings, infiltrating local cinema and music venues, and masquerading as yoga and qigong students.
There are also reports that an exhibition titled COLLIDE / CONNECT, ostensibly created to showcase the students’ thought-provoking work, will be presented at the An Talla Solais gallery space in Ullapool from Sunday 25th Feb – Sunday 3rd March, 10am – 4pm. Several witnesses confirm that these works use materials ranging from traditional oils, printmaking, and acrylics to found materials (including tablecloths) and collage. Entry to the show is free of charge and many works will be for sale. The suspects will be available for questioning.
Eva Faber, former head teacher of Ullapool primary school is rumoured to be among this group, along with recent Ullapool High School graduate Beth Renwick. But the local ringleader appears to be Eleanor White, in cahoots with Edinburgh-based accomplice Kittie Jones. Ms. Faber told us “After this course I will never see ironing in the same way again.”
