The Highland Liquor Co collects two national awards

The team from the Highland Liquor Co, Ross-shire, collected two awards at the Bartenders Brand Awards (BBA’s) 2024.
The Ullapool distillery’s Seven Crofts Fisherman’s Strength Gin was presented with a gold taste medal and their Seven Crofts Gin was presented with a silver taste medal at the seventh edition of the annual awards.
The awards are a unique blind tasting, design and value- tested competition for spirits, wines, beers, ciders, mixers, soft drinks, as well as low and no alcohol products used across the UK’s bar industry. In total there are 19 primary award categories including cider, beer, brandy, gin, agave spirits, low and no alcohol, mixers, vodka and whisky to name a few.
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are presented to the best- performing drinks products across three assessments covering taste, value and design. The highest scoring brand across all three assessment criteria in each category is declared category champion.
Each of the three judging phases is carefully controlled, for the tasting element over 50 of the UK’s leading bar professionals, blind taste each product, scoring each on aroma, complexity, taste and versatility. The design element takes into account bottle and packaging design, examining appeal and functionality, including things like ease of pouring. And finally the value element examines the price point of each product, which is revealed to the judges after the other two elements have been completed, to decide the product’s relative value in the marketplace.
Commenting on the double win Robert Hicks co-owner of The Highland Liquor Co said: “Winning a gold medal for Seven Crofts Fisherman’s Strength Gin and a silver medal for our Seven Crofts at the BBA’s is absolutely fantastic. Being showcased alongside our peers from across the industry provides our small artisan distillery with the opportunity to show what we are about to a broad audience, as well as exposing us to potential new customers across the UK. Both awards recognise the quality of what we produce and firmly demonstrate that we’re making progress, both creating handcrafted drinks that people enjoy and that stand out because they are distinctly different to many others in the market.

I will finish with a story (actually the Man’s story. I’d better say that or he might be upset).
Once there was a man who wanted to have an inscription carved on his wife’s gravestone. So he went to the local stonemason who came from one of those northern counties in a country not far from here, and asked him to carve, ‘The Kingdom is Thine’. When the man went to look at the stone, he saw that an e had been missed out. It read, ‘ The Kingdom is Thin’. So he tells the carver that he has missed out an e. When he returns to see the corrected carving, it reads, ‘E, The kingdom is thin’!
