Locals call for urgent protection of newly confirmed
herring spawning grounds offshore Wester Ross.
A team of national and local citizen scientists have recorded herring spawning on an area of sensitive seabed habitat off the coast of North Erradale, near Gairloch and are calling for urgent protection of the breeding ground of this commercially important fish population.
Om March 12, a team of local scientists found vast areas of herring eggs on maerl gravel northwest of Loch Gairloch using a remotely operated underwater camera, Shoals of spawning herring have been observed along Gairloch coastline since 2018, but this is the first time spawning has been recorded in this area of seabed off North Erradale for decades and is significant for the future of west coast herring.
The Scottish Government acknowledges that this area of seabed has essential habitats that deserve Protection, yet still have not put in place any fisheries management measures.

Ullapool School Parent Council fundraising disco made £582, this will go towards the cost of drama classes for the pupils.

Announcing the start of Radio Wester Ross
Two Lochs Radio and Lochbroom FM on April 29 will change to the new on-air name of Radio Wester Ross. There are a number of reasons as to why this is happening.
Having served two quite similar but diverse areas in the past, both being beautiful and full of the most wonderful people, and recently adding additional quality content that reflects Ullapool as an integral part of the transmission area. It seemed that to give everyone the feeling that they can invest and place trust in the station, then leaving behind dual identities in favour of a single banner to unite all listeners, was needed.
We have a new tool at our disposal which means we can shake off the historical restrictions and gives us the ability to produce our own programming 24/7, and with that, there is a desire to produce even more quality content that reflect life across Wester Ross. This removes the need to use a sustaining service to fill the programme.
Finally the fact that radio is a great investment for local business and one identity across all our broadcast areas means the reach for your message will go further. We rely on money for airtime sales and programme sponsorship and by building up our new brand that people can invest in, both as listeners and customers, is something that is exciting and will really give the business community an extra boost through working in partnership with us.
With a new name and a bit of a new sound we will still be on the same frequencies 106, 106.6 , 96.8, & 102.2 FM and striving to bring the local news and programming that serves the whole community.
