The village had amazing weather last weekend and was looking it’s best, the variety of flowers and blossom that appears every year in our village is amazing. From the cherry trees to the eucalyptus, laburnum, hawthorn and rowan and then there are the camellias, azaleas, rhodendendrons, gorse and broom, primroses, bluebells, and daisies and dandelions galore! Even more that could be listed.
The best time of year to visit !

….to all involved in the two Festivals held last weekend, the Science Festival Ulluminate and Luggerfest. Ullapool was buzzing in beautiful sunshine with hundreds of visitors and local people enjoying the new extended promenade, lots of boats & luggers moored in the new marina and music emanating from the tents – with the Superyacht Eos, a 3-masted Bermuda rigged schooner, moored out in the loch.
Quote of the weekend has got to be from a child coming out of the Village Hall having been to the science session on germs, rocks, jellyfish, etc. “I am taking my virus home with me”…..!!

Lugger Fest 24
Thank you so much to all the people involved in making Lugger Fest such a success last weekend. We had a superb time. The weather was a delight and the chance to see so these Luggers in the fantastic Harbour we have here in Ullapool was a thrill.
Thank you very much to the Ullapool Harbour Trust for the generous support they have given towards this and their backing and enthusiasm.
Thanks to the musicians who played for us – Mairearad Green, Mike Vass and Ruairidh MacLean and all the many traditional musicians who played sessions and the Ceilidh. Thanks too, to all the speakers who gave talks and recitals though the day on Saturday and the fantastic sound team who kept this all on track .
Thanks so much to Rhidorroch Distillery and Ewe Brew beer, who ran the bar! and all the food vendors, to Paul Hamilton who fed the crews and the brilliant team from Aultbea who kept a the tea flowing and the many bakers who baked in the run up to the event. Thanks aswell to An Talla Solais who ran the Art Tent and the Ullapool Museum for loaning exhibits and the tireless and dynamic team who worked the welcome stall on Saturday.
Thanks to the Loch Broom Sailing Club, Ullapool Coastal Rowing and Kayak Summer Isles for the taster sessions they ran on the Sunday and the Ullapool Sea Savers for their presentation. And of course thanks to all the boats who made it here to be with us this weekend and all the work and endeavour which went into making that possible!

WHEN OLD FRIENDS MEET
A review of When Mountains Meet, the Macphail Centre, Saturday 11 May 2024 (also on Friday 10 May)
It was perhaps extra special for us, here in Ullapool, finally to get to see Anne Wood’s gloriously colourful, dynamic and poignant When Mountains Meet last Saturday. Proud Anthony, smiling as ever, and quietly proud Fiona were there and I think many of us felt this was our production.
The Macphail Centre, transformed into a market place, a café, an airport departures lounge, the Karakoram Highway, the Hindu Kush, the Himalayas, reminded us of what a great and flexible asset we have here.
I’m not even going to try to recreate in words the atmosphere, the sounds, the tastes or the vibrancy of the production. If you weren’t there, you missed a treat.
In addition to the narrative, the palm stones, the green tea and ‘pastries’, the paper aeroplanes and the quick lesson in counting to three in Urdu (see what you missed!), the music was such a delight. Sitar, of course – and have you ever before heard an attempt at The Beautiful Blue Danube on the sitar? – and percussion, harp and Anne’s seemingly effortless dexterity on the violin was a liquid silver thread running through the whole production.
I looked around the auditorium and not one member of the full house was shuffling, restless or otherwise not gripped by every second of the 75 minutes or so of this wonderfully uplifting and life-affirming piece, performed with evident glee and utter professionalism by this happy troupe of actor-singer-dancer-musicians.
If you’re kicking yourself you didn’t manage to get a ticket, all is not lost. They’re on tour across Scotland now and everything you need to know is on their website at whenmountainsmeet.com.

Alan Britten died peacefully at home on 08th May 2024 at 91 years of age. Husband to the late Joan, father of Christine and John, dearly loved grandfather to Ross and Arran, great grandfather to Jade, Josh, Olivia, Aria & Coco and friend to many.
