ULLAPOOL BOOK FESTIVAL – THE SEQUEL
SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER
Ullapool Book Festival is delighted to announce the following guest writers for the event on 7 September.
10.30am: Malachy Tallack chaired by Zoe Strachan. Malachy is an award-winning author from Shetland. He will talk about (and sing!) from his next novel That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz (which is due for publication by Canongate on 17 October).
12 noon: Nuala Watt chaired by Chris Dolan. Nuala Watt is a poet lives and works in Glasgow. Her poems have appeared in many anthologies and have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and on BBC Radio Scotland. Her collection The Department of Work and Pensions Assesses a Jade Fish was published by Blue Diode in February 2024.
2.30pm: Louise Welsh chaired by Zoe Strachan. Louise is an award-winning author of ten novels. She will read from/discuss her latest novel To The Dogs which was published earlier this year and was a Times Best New Crime Fiction of the Month.
4pm : Darren McGarvey chaired by Chris Dolan. Darren is an author, musician and social commentator. His first book Poverty Safari: Understanding the Anger of Britain’s Underclass won the Orwell Prize and was an Amazon and Sunday Times Best-Seller. His second book is The Social Distance Between Us: How Remote Politics Wreck Britain

Far North MP led the debate on access to rural healthcare.
On Wednesday July 17 Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland & Easter Ross Jamie Stone led the first adjournment debate of the new parliament on access to rural health care.
In the debate, Mr Stone highlighted the challenges facing people living in his constituency, including difficulties finding dentists and GP staff, the absence of specialist mental health beds for children and young people north of Dundee and the challenges faced by pregnant mothers who are forced to travel to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness from as far as 100 miles away, which can take up to four hours.

BLAS FESTIVAL
Highlands & Islands 9-day festival marks its 20th anniversary
The annual 9-day festival of Gaelic culture and music, Blas, will mark its 20th anniversary with its return to the Highlands & Islands in September, featuring artists such as Julie Fowlis, Tim Edey & Ross Ainslie and Sian. This year’s Blas Festival, which will run from 6th to 14th September 2024, showcases Gaelic culture and the thriving Scottish traditional music scene over 9 days of events in venues across the Highlands and Islands. This year, through collaboration with others, the festival will host around 22 concerts and cèilidhs, in venues from Staffin to Strathy.
