The owners of an award-winning Highland restaurant with rooms are celebrating after receiving four prestigious awards from the AA, recognising the quality of their accommodation, food service and wine list.
The Dipping Lugger, Ullapool, in the north-western Highlands, has just successfully retained the AA’s five- star-gold Restaurant With Rooms Award, three AA Red Rosettes for Culinary Excellence and the AA Breakfast Award for the third consecutive year, and to round things off has now proudly added a Notable Wine List Award to their collection.

The Highland Liquor Company from Ullapool, Ross- shire were named winners of the Distilling Product of the Year – White Spirits category as food and drink businesses from across the country came together at the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards 2024.
On the night Seven Crofts Fisherman’s Strength Gin, handcrafted by the Highland Liquor Co team at their distillery in Ullapool, won through against stiff competition from Buck and Birch’s – BIRCH Premium Botanical Vodka, Isle Of Barra Distillers – Barra Atlantic Gin and North Uist Distillery’s – Downpour Scottish Dry Gin to claim the top spot.

Ferry Fare Increase Announcement
The Ferries Community Board are disappointed and surprised to see another Fares increase for island residents and businesses.
It is particularly disappointing that this increase has been decided with no consultation or impact assessment but applied by decree. The move towards more collaborative decision making and the application of the principals of the Islands Bill in terms of Islander community impact assessment have once again been forgotten when they are inconvenient.
Island Communities and businesses have suffered socially and financially over the last number of years due to lack of investment and poor decision making. It is now ironic that they are being further impacted with a 10% increase following the 8.7% increase that has only recently been implemented in 2024. This affects most the most vulnerable in our islands including the young and those with families at a time when universal free travel is protected elsewhere.

Drivers urged to plan ahead as Garve level crossing undergoes maintenance work
To allow safe access for engineers, the crossing at the A835 will fully close overnight on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October.
During the full closures, access will be enabled for the emergency services however there will be no access over the crossing for all other traffic.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place overnight on 21 and 22 October, as well as during daytime and evening hours on Saturday 19 October.
Full details of the closures and temporary traffic management arrangements are as follows:
• Full Road closure 9pm – 6am each night on October 19 & 20
• Half Road closure 4am – 9pm on Saturday October 19
Half road closure 9pm – 4am each night on October 21 & 22
Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained via the station footbridge at all times.
