…. to Ullapool’s Ruairidh Maclean who appeared on the TV show Britain’s Got Talent on Saturday 22nd February. The judges were amazed at your rendition of Yes Sir, I Can Boogie on the accordion and the whole audience were on their feet clapping and cheering.

Sunday 2nd March sees the opening of GLISK, a final exhibition of work by students of the Portfolio course at internationally acclaimed art school Bridge House Art in Ullapool, which celebrates its 30th year in 2025.

Many of this year’s students are experiencing Highland life for the first time, enthusiastically trying local activities, including cold-water swimming, wild camping on a munro, and chilling in a different way at Scotland’s most northerly club night, Baile/Baile.

The course structure consists of eight weeks of intense tuition in line, colour, drawing, painting, print, sculpture and artists’ books, followed by eight weeks of independent practice.  The resulting portfolios and gallery exhibition are a varied and confident body of work in oils, acrylic, mixed media and print which ably demonstrates the enlightenment – or glisk – to be had from this unique art course, which supports life-long learners and generates life-long friendships among its many alumni.

Wester Ross Radio Ltd. – Station Manager’s Annual Report – Extract 

Sometimes history can work against us and despite the heritage associated with Two Lochs Radio and Lochbroom FM, after taking in a wide range of views, I felt that a change was needed, a new beginning if you will, and in 2024, these stations re-branded as Radio Wester Ross. The aim being to bring all of the areas in our TSA (Total Sample Area of listening) together under one unifying banner. This was a chance to say that where ever you stayed – be it Ullapool, Achiltibuie, First Coast, Second Coast, Aultbea, Gairloch, Big Sand, Badachro or Kinlochewe, this was your station, telling your stories and playing the music of your life.

With a new digital play-out system installed, we were finally able to break away from having Smooth Radio as a sustaining service and end our status as what effectively was a NW Highland opt out of breakfast and evening programmes. We now have what I feel is a great brand, a definite musical proposition that does what the slogan says, i.e. playing those tracks, and more, that people have grown up with.

I am very happy to report that in terms of audience reaction and feedback, the strategy has worked, with listeners in all areas embracing the new sound and the music. It has been particularly gratifying to see the way the station has been adopted in Ullapool, which previously, and with some justification, appeared to feel that they no longer had a local option.
