For people new to the village and unaware of our history..!
The Ullapool News sprang to life in a room at 34 St Valery Place, Ullapool in 1973, the brainchild of Barry Todd, Donald Mason and Iain Campbell. The one page sheet was printed in the Royal Hotel on one of the old Gestetner stencil machines.
The current team comprises of 9 individuals, all with their specialist areas of responsibilities.
The production of the Ullapool News is very much a weekly team effort to get it on the shelves of our outlets on Friday mornings. We aim to be self-sufficient. We do not employ journalists as such and rely on all items being sent in to us. We cover the area from Lochinver down to Coigach, and round to Laide.
In 1998 the Team received a Civic Award from Ross & Cromarty Committee of Highland Council for services to the community. We are very proud of the fact that up until the end of March 2020 (Covid) we had not missed a week since 1973. (50 issues each year as we allow ourselves two weeks holiday over the Christmas/New year period).

FRIDAY 8 AUGUST – FELL LINE
Fell Line is an award-winning Glasgow-based folk trio featuring Chloë Bryce (Lewis McLaughlin), Megan MacDonald (Eabhal, HEISK), and Calum McIlroy (BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2024). They won Battle of the Folk Bands at Celtic Connections in 2024 and since then have gone on to appear on festival stages in Scotland and beyond.
SATURDAY 16 AUGUST – LEWIS MCLAUGHLIN DUO
Edinburgh-born Lewis McLaughlin was inspired by the likes of John Martyn and Villagers to begin writing and recording his own songs. He has performed across Europe and his current duo partner is Chloe Bryce from Tain who will be performing with him on fiddle and vocals.
FRIDAY 22 AUGUST – GRAINNE BRADY, BOO HEWERDINE & HEATHER CARTWRIGHT
Join three distinctive voices in contemporary folk for an intimate evening of original songs and powerful storytelling. Fiddle player and songwriter Gráinne’s music blends Irish and Scottish traditions with striking originality. Alongside her is Boo Hewerdine, one of the UK’s finest songwriters and rising folk artist Heather Cartwright, whose vibrant guitar work and poetic songwriting have earned her acclaim across the UK and beyond.
FRIDAY 29 AUGUST – CHRISTIAN GARRICK & JOHN ETHERIDGE
This world class duo provides a feast of interplay, improvisation and eclectic repertoire with music ranging from Peter Gabriel to Richard Rogers via Dollar Brand and Alison Goldfrapp. Guitarist John Etheridge and Christian Garrick. “One of the most potent relationships in European Jazz” (Guardian). Both of them known to Ullapool audiences – Christian as leader of Budapest Café Orchestra and John playing at the Guitar Festival.
There is so much more going on in other venues as well!
